Plan your visit to FLUGT

Do you want to experience beautiful architecture, strong personal stories, a highly relevant topic and the story of the largest refugee camp in Danish history?

Practical information

A successful museum visit starts from home. Where do we park? What about the dog? Can we get something to eat? Find the answers here.

Directions

Præstegårdsvej 21
6840 Oksbøl

Google Maps

Parking

Free parking for both private cars and buses. Arrival via Præstegaardsvej with direct access to the primary car park, P1. During peek season P2 is also used.

Buses can drop off passengers on the road between the two car parks, and then continue forward to park on P2.

Accessibility

The museum is inclusive and accessible to everyone.

Handicap Parking is found on P1. A paved footpath leads from the car park to the entrance. There are  toilets for the disabled both at the café and cloakroom. Wheelchairs and walkers are very welcome and also available to borrow at the museum! It is also possible to connect an induction loop in the conference room.

NOTE: The outdoor audiowalk through the forest does not meet the usual requirements for accessibility. The tour follows regular forest paths in uneven, varied terrain, intermittently disturbed by tree roots.

Dogs

Guide dogs and service dogs are welcome in FLUGT.

All other dogs must wait outside, where you will find outdoor dog crates in the shade. Bowls and fresh water is available for the dog. It is the owner's responsibility that the dog is comfortable during its stay in the crate.

In the forest, dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. Just behind the museum is Denmark's largest dog park.

Cloakroom

Free lockers available. No keys or coins needed. Just enter your own 6-digit code – the challenge is that you have to remember the code until you come back.

Audio guide

The exhibitions in FLUGT have no texts, but are based on audio that is activated by the guests themselves using a simple device and headsets. The audio guide is included in the entrance ticket, and acts as a guide when moving around the exhibition. The audio sequences are voiced by professional actors in Danish, German and English. The audio guide is activated partly by sensors in the exhibitions and the outdoor audio walk and partly by the guests themself when passing the device over clearly marked trigger points. If you prefer to read text, please tell the host when you buy your ticket.

Food & drink

In FLUGT Café you will find a varied selection of dishes inspired by gastronomic cultures from around the world – prepared with locally sourced ingredients. All dishes in FLUGT Café are simply created, so that the fresh ingredients are allowed to take center stage. When choosing sources, we focus on sustainability and organically grown meats and produce. We also sell organic softdrinks, freshly brewed coffee and ice cream . Enjoy your meal inside the café or on our outdoor terrace with a view to the forest. The café is open during museum opening hours. The kitchen closes one hour before the museum.

Schools and institutions that have booked a learning course in advance have the opportunity to enjoy their own packed lunch in connection with the visit. Packed lunches can be kept refrigerated in the conference rooms where the teaching takes place.

Groups, schools and institutions visiting the museum on their own are welcome to ask the hosts about available rooms for eating packed lunches. However, conference rooms can only be reserved in advance when also booking a learning course.

Shop

Decor for the home or summer house with a focus on good design and sustainability. Books about refugees for both children and adults. Treat yourself to a visit to the FLUGT museum shop. There is access to the shop without a ticket.

Guided tours

At the start of the visit, all guests are provided with a free audio guide, which completes the experience. With the headphones in your ears, it's like having your own private guide around the exhibitions. However, our skilled guides are happy to give a short introduction (30 minutes) to the museum. Groups

We highly recommend that groups of more than 15 people book their visit by contacting the Varde Museums' main office. Please plan with a realistic schedule and arrive at the booked time – if you arrive late, it may be difficult to find space for your group in the exhibition.

Please plan your visit outside weekends, peek season, holidays and public holidays. Please arrive well in advance of the announced time. Waiting time must be expected if the visit has not been announced.

Please advise us of your visit well in advance – regardless of whether you want to book a guide or not. This is done by contacting the Varde Museums' main office:

Phone.: +45 75 22 08 77
e-mail: vam@vardemuseum.dk

Open
Monday-Thursday 8am-4pm
Friday 8am-1pm

Outside office hours you can report your visit +45 51 79 06 57

We look forward to your visit!

Children

The exhibition Refugees at all times contains powerful images. We recommend that children are at least 8 years old and accompanied by an adult in order to see it. The exhibition Refugee Camp Oksbøl and the audio walk can be experienced by all ages.

Both mom and dad have access to changing facilities. Prams are welcome in FLUGT.

Schools

FLUGT is a brand new museum, but we have many years of experience in communicating the stories of refugees and the Refugee Camp Oksbøl. We offer exciting courses for schools, institutions and educational institutions. Explore our programs here.

Admission is free for schools and institutions - book your visit in advance at the museum administration.

Accommodation

If you are on the West Coast for a longer period of time, you can rent a holiday home from one of the many rental agencies. If you are looking for holiday homes in Blåvand or holiday homes in Ho, you can visit FerieKompagniet, a local rental agency specializing in Blåvand and Ho.

While Blåvand offers a range of dining and shopping options, Vejers Strand is the "quiet little brother". Here, nature and tranquillity are paramount. Die "hyggelige" Dänen is a local rental agency with almost 40 years of experience renting out holiday homes in Vejers.

FerieKompagniet and Die "hyggelige" Dänen have joined forces with a number of other local rental agencies on the West Coast to form the Nordsee Holidays portal, where you can find a wide range of holiday homes on the West Coast.

From hospital to museum

With the largest refugee camp in Danish history as a unique setting, personal and powerful stories are told about refugees of all times.

Using as a basis the hospital of the refugee camp, which originally consisted of 40 small wards and operating rooms, world-renowned architect firm BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group created a brand-new museum. The two original hospital wings have retained their exterior of red bricks, small-mullioned windows, and red-tiled roofs.

A large, beautiful, curved, 500-m2 new building unites the original wings. This is where visitor facilities – foyer, cloakroom, ticket office and museum shop – are situated. The museum includes two permanent exhibitions, an audiowalk in the surrounding forest, a refugee cemetery as well as a café and conference rooms.
